Observations - learnings
Minutes and learnings from Nakiwala Neighbourhood
Neighbourhood Kinship Dialogue
The Vision Awakens https://youtu.be/GlrXdMhyxu4?t=117 During a Regenerative Development and Design course, we were invited to image (envision) a place in a regenerative future state. When Kiwaatule was imaged, what emerged was powerful: a beautiful reciprocal relation where the Nalubaaga wetland evolves from extinction to flourishing - enhancing the wellbeing of the people, and the people enhancing the health of the wetland. It was so beautiful, vivid, alive and energising to let it pass. It sparked curiosity to question: How can we gather neighbourhoods to co-create their own shared vision and coordinate internal and external resources to manifest it? What? Organise collective self-discovery and collective dreaming sessions as a stepping stone for neighbourhoods to ko-create the future on a living systems foundation. Goal! Establish a relation with neighbourhoods by understanding what they value and care about, their challenges, and the life they dream of in this place, then inviting them to ko-design a new future for themselves and their place - reconciling human dreams with what the land wants. The Learning Journey Begins We embarked on a deep learning journey. Our core question was: what conditions will motivate landowners in Kiwaatule to pool land development decisions into a Distributed Stewarding Cooperative. It doesn't mean you lose rights to your land, rather the land gains higher-order potential. This restructuring enables cooperation that attracts long-term investment towards reversing the extinction of Nalubaaga wetland into a thriving nature park, co-owned regenerative enterprises and community services defining a harmonious human-nature relation? We started neighborhood kinship dialogues. What? Organise collective self-discovery and collective dreaming sessions as a stepping stone for neighbourhoods to ko-create the future on a living systems foundation. Goal! Establish a relation with neighbourhoods by understanding what they value and care about, their challenges, and the life they dream of in this place, then inviting them to ko-design a new future for themselves and their place. Preparing for the dialogue. 1. A host household invites neighbours to kinship dialogues. 2. Participants do collective self-discovery and explore their dream life. 3. Later we’ll ko-design a regenerative economy with all life in this place - reconciling our collective dreams toward the ecological health of this place. Inside the Neighbourhood Kinship Dialogue! 1. Understand what people value and care about Remember a good day in this place, pick a fruit that represents it, and tell us a story of what made it sweet. 2. Understand their challenges in this place Remember a hard day in this place, pick a fruit that represents it, and tell us a story of what made it sour. 3. Understand their dream life in this place Pick a pack of fruits representing the life you dream of in this place and tell us a story of the life you dream of in this place.

Nakiwala Neighbourhood
Organise a Neighbourhood kinship Dialogue at Nakiwaala Emily's home. Nakiwala invites neighbours, we provide some refreshments, and also buy fruits and vegetables to be used as medium for people to imagine and tell stories. 1. Understand what people value and care about Remember a good day in this place, pick a fruit that represents it, and tell us a story of what made it sweet. Inside the Neighbourhood Kinship Dialogue! 2. Understand their challenges in this place Remember a hard day in this place, pick a fruit that represents it, and tell us a story of what made it sour. 3. Understand their dream life in this place Pick a pack of fruits representing the life you dream of in this place and tell us a story of the life you dream of in this place.
Communing is a powerful tool for system evolution
Early Learnings from the Neighbourhood Kinship Dialogues. We've held 5 Neigbourhood Kinship Dialogues and; 1) There is Potential in Communing. There was high energy, enthusiasm, and a wealth of ideas from people. This indicates that the main reason the status quo persists is the absence of spaces for collective dreaming, leading to individual dreaming taking precedence. Consequently, we all work below our individual and collective potential. As Nora Bateson says, "There will not be community without communing." 2) People are ready to transition to the new system. People were eager for more engagement, details, and clarity on their roles and contributions. They are ready to transition to a more beautiful system of living, offering their skills, time, and resources to help build it. 3) A TRUST and LEADERSHIP gap is waiting to be filled. They are hungry for trusted leadership and crave valued and value-adding community coordination. They want their contributions to be appreciated by the community and to meaningfully add value to their lives and households. In summary; What is separating us from a better system is the trust and leadership gap that we can fill through communing. As such, we are embarking on a different development process that engages all life in this place – people, nature, and the land itself in ko-designing a thriving future for this place.
